In a significant step towards eradicating Female Genital Mutilation (FGM/C) and child marriage, Wings Education and Media organized panel discussions on 18 May  2023 , in Hawassa. The discussion brought together key stakeholders, experts, and community leaders to address the prevalence and harmful effects of these practices.

The panelists included Mrs. Ruth Regassa from UNICEF, Mrs. Yamrot Haile from the Bureau of Health (BOH), Mrs. Tsehay Admassu from the Bureau of Justice (BOJ), Commander Degitu Tiegicho from the Sidama Police, Mr. Bekele Lagide from the Bureau of Women, Children, and Social Affairs (BOWCSA), and Priest Teklu Dakole from the Religious Council. The participants represented a diverse range of organizations, including the Regional Police, Youth Federation, Women Federation, Students, Sidama TV reporters, and Traditional and Community Leaders.

The panel discussion covered a wide array of crucial topics related to FGM/C and child marriage. Mrs. Ruth Regassa from UNICEF provided an overview of the prevalence, causes, consequences, and cultural factors contributing to these harmful practices. Mrs. Tsehay Admassu from the BOJ highlighted existing laws and policies that criminalize FGM/C and child marriage, emphasizing their enforcement at the regional level. Priest Teklu Dakole from the Religious Council emphasized that these practices have no basis or support in the Holy Bible.

Mrs. Yamrot Haile from the BOH shed light on the health implications of FGM/C and child marriage, underlining the importance of accessible and comprehensive healthcare services for survivors. Mr. Bekele Lagide from BOWCSA stressed the significance of collaboration and partnerships between government agencies, NGOs, civil society organizations, and international bodies to effectively combat FGM/C and child marriage.
