Panel Discussion on FGM in Adama

A panel discussion was organized on very important thematic areas related to the elimination of harmful traditional practices (HTPs), specifically Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and Child Marriage (CM in Adama, Oromia Region. The event was held on 22 June 2023 at Eftah Hotel, Adama.

It was moderated by Mrs.Mariama Amanu (BOWCA). 

Key Discussion Points:

  • Mr. Ewnetu Busheri from BOWCA presented the current data on the prevalence of FGM and CM in the region and explained some of the best things done in the region combating these practices.
  • Mr. Usman Ibrahim from BOWCA explained the causes, consequences, and the cultural and societal factors that perpetuate these practices.
  • Mr. Fikadu Wakjira from UNICEF emphasized the need to challenge harmful traditional beliefs and norms while respecting local customs and traditions.
  • Mr. Idris Temam from the BOJ stressed on the importance of strengthening legal measures, ensuring effective implementation.
  • Sister Selam Hassen from BOH focused on the importance of providing accessible and comprehensive healthcare services to survivors of FGM and CM.
  • She emphasized the need for medical care, psychological support and rehabilitation programs to ensure the physical and emotional well-being of survivors. The panelists discussed the importance of sharing best practices, resources, and expertise to develop a coordinated and sustainable approach towards elimination.

One of the guests were a survivor of FGM and CM. Her story was a testament to the resilience and strength of those who have experienced FGM and CM. Her advocacy work is crucial in raising awareness and bringing about change in her community affected by these harmful practices. Her determination to continue her education and envision a better future for herself is inspiring.
