Radio Drama Series

The Radio Drama series were crafted using captivating storylines and compelling characters. They were written in Afar Af, Afaan Oromo, Agnwak, Amharic, and Sidama Languages, paying due attention to the respective culture and language. The radio dramas were written and acted out by highly talented professionals. 14 episodes each were produced in the five different languages, making a total of 70 episodes. Involving local talents as script writers and voice actors boosted the sense of ownership of among stakeholders. The audience responded to the dramas by engaging through telephone calls to forward feedback, share their experiences and ask questions.

The radio Magazine Shows were produced in the five languages as in the radio drama. Experts were invited on the shows to share insights on FGM and ECM. Also survivors and community members were interviewed to share personal stories with regards to these HTPs. 8 episodes each in the five different languages were produced for the Radio Magazine Shows, making a total of 40 episodes.

Best Practices and Lessons Learned

The existence of a platform for experts and other stakeholders to come together to discuss on issues related to CM and FGM, the participatory approach of the different projects of the campaign, the involvement of survivors and champions in the different platforms of the campaign, the employment of local talents in writing the scripts, the acting out of the dramas and presenting the shows and the use of art and music, which created engaging and entertaining environment, in the panel discussions, stood out as the best practices of the campaign. Increasing community involvement, the need for regular monitoring and evaluation of the campaign and sustaining the campaign were the major lessons learned in the campaign.

The Mass Media Campaign is aimed at reaching families, communities, and influencers through locally produced contents and thereby raising public awareness on female genital mutilation and Child Marriage in Ethiopia. It also intended to contribute to the national effort to eliminate FGM and child marriage by making the issues a national agenda among the key actors.  Stakeholders were engaged to share about the situation based on current evidence and ongoing effort.

Moreover, they were encouraged to refresh their commitment through the different activities of the campaign.  Accessing the communities at a large scale, engaging media to disseminate tailored messages, stimulating debate and discussion on around child marriage and FGM and influencing decision makers were the objectives of the Campaign. 

The media campaign was implemented in eight regions through panel discussions, intergenerational dialogue, radio dramas and radio shows.; namely Afar, Amhara, Gambella, Oromia, South Ethiopia, South West Ethiopia, Sidama, and Somali. Similarly the campaign was launched at the Federal level through panel discussions.  It targeted a diverse audience, including community members, policymakers, healthcare providers, educators, young girls and women at risk of being affected by FGM and ECM.

Panel Discussions and Inter-generational Dialogues:

 The panel discussions and Inter-generational dialogues involved the participation of different regional government officials, experts, CSOs, Development partners, community leaders, religious leaders, young boys and girls and survivors of FGM and child marriage. A total of 18 panel discussions and intergenerational dialogues were conducted during the campaign.

There was active participation during the discussions through question-and-answer sessions. The audience had opportunities to ask questions and share opinions to the panelists.
